Gitanjali Aiyar, a popular and award-winning Doordarshan news anchor, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 75. She was one of India's first English female news presenters on the national broadcaster and a pioneer in the field of journalism. She had been suffering from Parkinson's disease and collapsed after returning home from a walk, according to sources close to the family .
Aiyar joined Doordarshan in 1971 and received the best anchor award four times. She also won the Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award for Outstanding Women in 1989. She graduated from Kolkata's Loreto College and held a diploma from the National School of Drama (NSD). Besides presenting news programmes, she also acted in TV dramas and was associated with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
She was widely admired for her credibility, professionalism and distinct voice. Many noted personalities expressed their condolences on social media. Her son and daughter Pallavi Aiyar, who is also an award-winning journalist, survive her .
